The Orion Fountain, located in front of the cathedral, was designed in the 16th century by a pupil of Michelangelo. It is one of the most beautiful fountains of that time. It is decorated with mythological scenes. The Fountain of Neptune in the square of the Palazzo del Governo was built in 1557. Neptune, emerging from the waters, symbolizes the moral strength of the city which has experienced many disasters. The Falconieri Fountain, built in 1842, was destroyed by the earthquake of 1908 and rebuilt in 1957 in the centre of Piazza Basicò.
