CASTELLO DI LIPARI
Castle with powerful encircling walls, fortifications and Greek remains
This enclosure was built by the Spanish after the destruction of the city by the corsair of Algiers, Khayr ad-Din, better known as Barbarossa in 1544. The mighty walls encircle 13th-century fortifications and Greek remains, including a 4th-century BC tower. Inside are five churches, including the Norman cathedral (the 12th-century cloister and frescoes remain), rebuilt in 1654. Dedicated to St Bartholomew, patron saint of the Aeolian Islands, it has a 19th-century façade and a Baroque interior.
