ST. AUGUSTINE CHURCH
St. Augustine's Catholic Church in New Orleans, originally part of the plantation of Frenchman Claude Tremé.
Built in 1841 as a church for the free black citizens of New Orleans, St. Augustine's Catholic Church is one of Treme's must-sees. The property on which it stands was originally part of the plantation of Frenchman Claude Tremé. The building was designed by French architect J. N. B. de Pouilly, who, among other things, worked on the expansion and renovation of St. Louis Cathedral. It was named after the Ursuline Sisters who had owned the land a few years earlier.
