Cemetery offering a visit with a guide to discover the supposed tomb of Marie Laveau, easily recognizable.

Built away from the city for fear of the spread of yellow fever, it is the oldest in the city. The graves are raised because this part of New Orleans is below sea level. You will find there the supposed tomb of Marie Laveau, high priestess voodoo, buried there in 1881. His grave is easily recognizable. You will see many of the "X's" left behind by tourists in the past. It is because of this type of vandalism that it is now mandatory to visit the cemetery with a guide.

grosse déception !
On avait beaucoup entendu parler de ce cimetière (nous imaginions une sorte de Père Lachaise) et grosse déception car il n’y a vraiment rien de rare, la visite est chère et le guide avait un accent terrible que nous avons eu beaucoup de mal à comprendre... si on ajoute la chaleur moite du mois d’août, on peut éviter, on ne manquera rien !

Ce cimetière est extrêmement visité aux Etats unis, car il contient la tombe de Marie Laveau (mais peut être pas ou l'on croit qu'elle est) mais aussi parce qu'il s'agit d'un cimetière avec caveaux et tombes au dessus du sol et non en pleine terre contrairement à ailleurs aux Etats unis (apparemment à cause des inondations fréquentes à la Nouvelle-Orléans). En dehors de ces deux choses le cimetière n'a pas vraiment d'intérêt et se trouve dans un quartier pas spécialement bien fréquenté.

Au même titre qu'on visite le Père Lachaise, un passage à La Nouvelle Orléans peut s'accompagner d'une visite du cimetière n°1. L'entrée se fait obligatoirement avec un guide payant. Le prix peut paraître élevé, mais finalement ça vaut vraiment le coup car c'est réellement éclairant sur l'histoire de la ville et les coutumes locales. On traverse les âges et remonte le temps tout en découvrant les noms et l'histoire des personnes enterrées là. Une visite éclairante!
