SHOTGUN HOUSES

Typical New Orleans houses with doors facing each other, designed in a very symmetrical way.
Shotgun means "shot". These houses, characteristic of the American South, are designed in a very symmetrical way. The doors face each other on either side of the house so that air can circulate easily. It is said that if a shot is fired through one of the doors, the bullet comes out at the exact opposite end, hence the name of these houses. In New Orleans, you can find these typical houses in almost every neighborhood, especially in Treme, Bywater or Algiers Point. But many had to be demolished after Hurricane Katrina.
