CORNSTALK FENCE
Victorian style house with a wrought iron gate depicting corn stalks and ears of corn with day lights
You will stop by this Victorian style house built in 1850 mainly for its wrought iron gate which represents corn stalks and ears of corn mixed with belles-de-jour. It was originally the home of François-Xavier Martin, the first chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court and author of the first history of Louisiana. He lived there from 1816 to 1826. The present Victorian style dates from the 1850s and is often noted for its wrought iron gate depicting corn plants with their stalks, leaves and fruit mixed with vines and flowers. There are only two like it in the city, and the gate was cast in Philadelphia by the Wood & Perot foundry, shipped by boat and installed in 1834.
