THE F.P.C. MUSEUM
Unique museum in the world to visit with nice houses to rent for a night or more in the area.
Housed in a magnificent old Greek Revival villa next to the Degas House, this unique museum is the guardian of the memory of the Free People of Colors (F.P.C.). Despite its major role in the evolution of Louisiana and the United States in general, the history of this category of population - that of free-born black men, whose presence is attested in New Orleans since 1722 - is often misunderstood. Physicists, journalists, artists, businessmen, the free people of colors occupied high social positions and weighed heavily in the struggle for the emancipation of Blacks. It is this history that the excellent f.p.c. Museum proposes to explore, through the exhibition of an impressive number of historical pieces of cultural value (documents, paintings, decorative arts...) that one discovers according to the erudite comments given by the guide. An absolutely essential visit to understand Louisiana and America today.
Note that the museum has beautiful houses in the area that can be rented for one night or more: Little House on the Bayou (three rooms), Chez Vivian (two rooms) and Creole Cottage (one room plus two trundle beds in the living room). Each is fully equipped, from full kitchen to laundry facilities, and two have an additional back deck. Reservation requests can be made directly through the online form on the museum's website.
