SAINT-ANDRÉ CHURCH

The church of Lavaudieu has a unique nave of the th century. Two vibrating arches separate the transept from the nave and from the apse in a four. The steeple, originally marked, was cut off from the Revolution. It sits on a two-storey octagonal tower. In 1966, a collection of about 200 m 2 of frescoes was found in the church. A long 24 metre frise decorated the nave. A completely exceptional set dominated by Black Death. On a reddish background, a veiled black woman throws arrows, randomly, on the common of the mortals: fascinating allegory of the terrible epidemics of plague that struck the country at the beginning of the th century. Finally, in order to complete this rich iconographic ensemble, we will focus on a wall panel discovered in 1968 on the northern wall devoted to the martyrdom of St. Ursula and the hundred thousand virgins in Cologne inspired by the Golden Legend.
