Elegant 22-room residence, architecture mixing Steamboat Gothic, Moorish, French and Creole styles

The centerpiece of the park is the house built in 1870 by actor Joseph Jefferson, who played the character Rip Van Winkle on stage. This elegant 22-room mansion features a mix of Steamboat Gothic, Moorish, French and Creole architecture and is furnished in the Empire style. Inside, a video presents the history of the island, including the 1980 disaster, when drilling in Lake Peigneur caused the top of the salt dome to break through and flood the salt mine and gardens.

Beautiful amazing place. Rich in history and some of the best kept gardens I have ever seen.

Be sure to stop at Rips Rookery before you reach the main gate. It's free to walk around the lake. The nesting is of course seasonal. We saw two large alligators which were swimming in the lake. There were plenty of Rosette Spoonbills and Snowy Egrets, as this was early April.
