ABBEY SAINT-CHAFFRE
A masterpiece of Romanesque art in the heart of Le Monastier, with magnificent chapels, an organ and a beautifully sculpted pulpit.
The abbey's remarkable Romanesque façade is a polychrome mosaic of white, black and red stone, reinforced by solid buttresses, divided horizontally into two levels, and profusely carved with a wide variety of motifs. Its dimensions are remarkable: it's the second largest church in the department, after Le Puy-en-Velay Cathedral. One radiating chapel stands out for its Renaissance coffered ceiling, another for its contemporary stained-glass window above the plaque commemorating the local inhabitants who died for France.
