LA PLACE DU MARTOURET
The name comes from the Latin martoretum, which means cemetery. In the popular spirit, this name eventually took the meaning of «place des Martyrs» because this place was reserved for public executions. It was also there that on June 8, 1794 the previous and authentic statue of the Black Virgin was burned. During the French Revolution, the guillotine, settled there permanently from March 30, 1793 to January 1795, lives under its blade 41 convicted, including 18 priests. The square is closed to the left by the city hall. The tree of Liberty, which occupies the center of the square, houses a monument to the very sober dead.
