Built in 1775 by the architect Jensen, the Petrina Academy is Latvia's oldest institution of higher education and one of the few surviving period buildings. Many poets and even former Latvian politicians have passed through its walls. If the exterior is magnificent, the interior is also worth a visit, as it houses the city's Museum of Art and History, including a large collection of paintings by the famous Latvian painter Ģederts Eliass (1887-1975). Temporary exhibitions and explanatory leaflets in English.
