The first Latgalian castle from the 9th century was built on the banks of the river. In 1285, Rossiten Castle was built on the same site by the Germans as the residence of the Glaive Knights. Successively occupied by the Russians, Lithuanians and Poles, it was destroyed by the Swedes during the war of 1656-1660. The castle was never rebuilt and only the ruins remain to be visited (Pilsdrupas in Latvian).
