The imposing concrete building was constructed between 1976 and 1980 to house the Supreme Soviet. In 1990, the act re-establishing the Lithuanian state was signed in the hall, transforming the building into the Republican Parliament. In January 1991, when Soviet troops arrived, thousands of demonstrators erected barricades to defend the building; a permanent exhibition and memorial on the left side of the building recount these events.
