STATUE OF KING MINDAUGAS
In front of the New Arsenal stands the statue of Mindaugas (1203-1263), the first Grand Duke of all Lithuania and, above all, the one and only crowned Lithuanian king (1253-1263). After his assassination, Lithuania lost its status as a kingdom, and his successors took the title of grand dukes. The statue's base is surrounded by symbols from the ancient Baltic calendar, which are also found in ancient writings. The statue was sculpted by Regimantas Midvikis and unveiled in 2003, on the 750th anniversary of Mindaugas' coronation.
