GEDIMINAS TOWER AND MOUNT GEDIMINAS
Behind Cathedral Square (just past the statue of Gediminas, Grand Duke of Lithuania), a paved path leads up through the park to Mount Gediminas(kalnas), the original base of Vilnius. Good to know: Mount Gediminas can also be reached by funicular from the inner courtyard of the Museum of Ethnography and History, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April to October. On this hill, Gediminas built the upper castle, first mentioned in chronicles in 1323. Today, part of the castle has been restored, and the western tower, known as the Gediminas Tower (Gedimino pilies bokštas) - the symbol of Vilnius - is the best preserved. From the top of the tower, where the Lithuanian flag flies, a magnificent panorama stretches over the city: to the far east stands the Hill of the Three Crosses (Trys kryžių kalnas), to the south stretches the Old Town and, to the west, Gediminas shopping avenue winds its way through the districts of the New Town, behind the banks of the Neris, while in the distance loom the new districts, which date from the Soviet period. Just to enjoy this incredible view of the city, you won't regret having made it to the top! Inside the Gediminas Tower, a vestige of Vilnius's high castle, is a small museum displaying armor from the 16th to 18th centuries and models illustrating the castle in different eras.
