It was in this house that the Japanese Chiune Sugihara, consul in Lithuania between 1939 and 1940, with the help of his Dutch counterpart Jan Zwartendijk, organized a vast rescue plan for thousands of Jews. Those with Polish passports were sent to Russia on transit visas. It is estimated that during the last month spent in Kaunas, 300 visas were issued per day, and that these two men saved 6,000 Jews from the Holocaust.
