Built at the end of the 19th century under the Tsarist Empire to defend its western borders, Fort No. 9 was transformed by the Nazis into a concentration camp. More than 50,000 Jews died here. We are 900 Frenchmen" is engraved in stone. Later, under Stalin, it was used as a prison and place of execution. Today, a museum retraces the Nazi atrocities of the Holocaust, as well as those committed by the Soviet regime against Lithuanians. Clearly one of Kaunas' must-sees.
