The FK Baltika, despite the German origins of the city, is not particularly distinguished by its performance. Accustomed to the second and third Soviet divisions, the club climbed into L 2 Russian in 1993 and maintained it, after having spent three years in First League. The Kaliningrad Club has the particularity of being rather poor, and that is the composition of the team: almost all the incumbents are Russian. Because of the history of the city, which could not be associated with a large labor conglomerate typical of the 1920/1930 s, the club suffered a little from a lack of integration into its territory. Today, its main sponsor is not a bank or a private company, as is often the case, but the government of the Kaliningrad region. In 2013, a mini scandal broke out when the club president said he had voluntarily asked his players to perform a underperformance, with the club unable to fund a First League season if they were to win.
