MONT YERER
A mountain at 2,500 m altitude with a volcano at 3,100 m, offering panoramic views of the Debre Zeit volcanic lakes.
From Dukem, a village halfway between Addis Ababa and Debre Zeit, a track, passable in the dry season, leads 10 km northeast to the slopes of Mount Yerer, at 2,500 m altitude. This extinct volcano, one side of whose crater has collapsed, rises to 3,100 m and offers a beautiful panorama of the Debre Zeit volcanic lakes. Its wooded slopes are home to the Church of the Trinity, the scene of a major celebration on January 16, as well as caves where hermits come to live far from the world.
