THE FORTRESS OF AFAMBO
Built in 1943, this fortress offers a panoramic view of the Gamari, Ihita and Affambo lakes, separated by steep ridges.
In 1943, the French army built this fort, now in ruins, in the village of Afambo, very close to the Djibouti border. It was only after ten years of border negotiations that the area was returned to Ethiopia on February 28, 1954. After the border was demarcated, the fortress was occupied by the Ethiopian army, then slowly fell into ruin over the years. From the fort opens a majestic panorama of the Gamari, Ihita and Affambo lakes, separated by steep ridges. The last lake is salty.
