SAINT MARY'S CHURCH

Remarkable Catholic mission church founded in 1881, where Arthur Rimbaud used to come with the fathers.
While Harar boasts over a hundred mosques, only two historic churches exist. Opposite a mosque, this Catholic mission church founded in 1881 is remarkable for its carved wooden door. Arthur Rimbaud used to come here to talk to the fathers who held religious services here in his day. On the exterior façade, a plaque reminds us that the bishop of Harar, André Jarosseau, was the tutor of Ras Tafari, the future emperor Haile Selassie, who lived in this town.
