Inaugurated in 1990 by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, it boasts a 2,139-seat theater on three floors and regularly hosts performances by the New Zealand Opera, the Royal Ballet, the Auckland Philharmonic and the Symphony Orchestra, as well as numerous international artists and a variety of shows.
