The Tane Mahuta is a sacred tree whose name means "lord of the forest" in Maori. This giant kauri is the largest in the country, standing 51 metres tall, with a girth of 14 metres and an estimated age of over 1,200 years. Te Matua Ngahere, "the father of the forest", is the second largest kauri, measuring 30 metres in height and over 16 metres in circumference. It is estimated to be at least 2,000 years old. A short walk will take you there: between 3 and 20 minutes.
