An ancient volcano turned into a 3,400-hectare protected reserve where New Zealand's endemic flora and fauna can flourish without predators. 48 km of fences make the area a veritable sanctuary. At 28 km from Te Awamutu, the entrance to the southern slopes is marked by a visitor center and the start of hiking trails. Species that live here and can be encountered include kaka, hihi, takahe, giant weta, popokatea, kiwi and tuatara.
