In the 1880s, some 30 schools were opened to train gold miners. Thames School of Mines is of national importance. It was the largest and longest-running of its kind. The history and development of mining in the town is told, including the evolution of tools and techniques. Numerous minerals and fossils are on display. Guided tours are available at 10:30, 11:30, 13:30 and 14:30.
