Tairua is an excellent base for exploring the east coast and offshore islands or the rugged mountains in the background. The two peaks of Mount Paku guard the harbor entrance and offer 360-degree views from the Aldermen Islands to the Pinnacles in Coromandel Forest Park. Tairua is just a few minutes' walk from bush trails and kauri forests, old mines and caves, and Pauanui is just a short ferry ride across the harbor. The offshore islands of Slipper, Shoe and the Aldermen Islands can also be explored by booking a trip with local diving and fishing charters. Tairua and Pauanui, two fabulous twin port towns on the east coast of Coromandel, offer a superb Pacific Ocean setting for exploration. Nearby is Mount Paku, a hill carved in the shape of a two-cone Maori pa that was once an island, while offshore are the Slipper, Shoe and Aldermen Islands. A number of fishing boats and charters operate from both docks, and the beaches are perfect for safe swimming and surfing in most conditions.
