Erected in 1847, The Elms Mission House is the oldest European building in the region. It was in this traditional British-style house that the Christian religion was taught to the local Maori population. It was here that reading, writing and even farming and certain domestic tasks were taught. Still furnished as it was in those days, it's an interesting and instructive historical visit. You can take a stroll in the gardens.
