This trek, a 66 km circuit usually completed in 4 to 5 days, is less popular than the Northern Circuit. The trek takes the hiker around Mount Ruapehu. It can be done all year round, but the weather is best from December to March. It traverses varied and superb landscapes. In winter, you'll need crampons and ice axe. The trek is accessible from Whakapapa, Ohakune or the Desert Road. There are six huts along the route. Please note that Waihohonu Hut and campsite must be booked in advance in high season.

Une randonnée dans un paysage désertique
Cette randonnée de 4 à 5 jours peut également être faite sur des périodes plus courte en ne faisant pas le tour complet. Elle vaut le détour. Peut emprunter puisque tout le monde préfère aller sur le great walk voisin, elle est donc plus facilement accessible en terme de logement.
