This museum presents the natural and cultural history of the Wairoa District, from the arrival of the Māori over 1,000 years ago, to colonization and the present day. Fauna and flora are not forgotten, of course, and the region's birds are also under the microscope. Temporary exhibitions regularly showcase the work of local artists, or even budding artists. The museum regularly exhibits the work of students from Toihoukura, Gisborne's school of contemporary visual arts.
