For a closer look at the city's Art Deco ambience, it doesn't get much better than the Masonic Hotel! The original version was built in 1861, but destroyed by fire in 1896. The hotel was rebuilt, but again in 1931: an earthquake caused a fire that ravaged the building once again. The present hotel was rebuilt in 1932, in the sleek, elegant style for which it is renowned. The interiors are sumptuous, and you're almost sorry to be dressed in 21st-century clothes. A little anachronistic but practical: free internet connection.
