A weekend-long festival that allows Napier to embrace its Art Deco identity by taking a trip back to the 1930s.
The city of Napier was devastated in 1931 by an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale. After this disaster, it was decided to rebuild the city in the Art Deco style, making it one of New Zealand's most distinctive cities. To experience this to the full, head there in mid-February for the Arts Deco Festival! Over the course of a weekend, Napier rewinds to the 1920s-30s and celebrates its heritage in a series of events ranging from car parades to Roaring Twenties dance classes.
