Highly regarded locally, comprehensive, interactive and well produced, Puke Ariki is here to share the history of Taranaki and New Plymouth, from the remote times of its geological formation to the arrival of the first Maoris, colonization and more recent history. An entire exhibition is dedicated to the Maori culture and heritage ("tangata whenua") of the region's iwi . The establishment also houses the municipal library and tourist office. The attached Richmond Cottage was built in stone in the mid-19th century.
