The trail starts on the Whanganui River Road, 36 kilometers north of the city. It is a beautiful hike through ferns, forest, hills and pastures. If you want to enjoy the view without going on the almost 13 km hike, you can simply go to the Atene Viewpoint, a short 2-hour walk to reach the viewpoint.
As often, you will have to have a keen eye to find the start of the walk, as it is only indicated by a sign on the roadside. No parking, you will have to park on the side of the road.
