30 kilometers north of Masterton, Pūkaha, or Mont Bruce Reserve, is a forest undergoing restoration as well as a site hosting breeding programs for endangered species. The reserve is home to many species including kiwi, pāteke (brown duck), whio (blue duck), takahē, kōkako, kākā, tuturuatu (shore plover), and tuna (longfin eels). Pūkaha is also home to a whare whaikaro, a Maori sculpture studio that can be visited.
