This Great Walk requires a good physical condition. The route leads through tussock, ferns and palm trees and is suitable for year-round walking and mountain biking. Long before it was used by walkers, the Heaphy Track was used by Maoris travelling from Golden Bay to the West Coast. Some remains of their dwellings are still visible. Later, Europeans settled in this area to hunt sea lions, mine for gold and timber. Remember to book your overnight stays (7 huts and 10 campsites).
