The small independent museum of Kaikoura presents the history of the region through its inhabitants and activities, with the help of photos and interesting objects. Maoris and whale hunters are the subjects of the visit. It also deals with agriculture, geology, fishing, modes of transportation, communication systems and the development of trade. The museum also contributes to the research and restoration of certain sites such as the cabin of the ship Taiaroa, the prison with a padded cell and the replica of the largest intact Moa egg.
