Here is a very unusual concept! Opened in 2006 in Christchurch's trendy new district, the former Addington Prison dating from 1874 has been converted into a hostel. Some of the cells have been left as they were so that guests can experience the conditions of incarceration at the time. The rest have been converted into clean, bright, modern rooms. The common areas, although once prison-like, are modern and warm. This establishment has won several awards and is very popular with backpackers.
