You don't have to go all the way to Antarctica to see penguins! Three different species populate New Zealand's coasts. On Akaroa, it's the smallest (and cutest) of them all that you can see: the little blue penguin. The Helps family has been actively involved in protecting the colony ever since these charming birds made their home here. A visit to the colony gives you the privilege of observing the penguins in their natural habitat, while helping to protect them.

We loved our tour! Initially we wanted the kayak tour but because of weather pivoted to the walking tour and it ended up being amazing. We met penguins, seals, countless birds, and sheep. Our guide was so knowledgeable and cared a lot about the ecosystem and environment. It's very clear that everyone in this conservation mission really cares and believes in their mission.

Definitely book and go to a evening tours to see penguins! The guides were very nice and told us lots of info related to the town, area and penguins. I do enjoy the evening and the tour and would also join 1 again if I have a chance visiting the area.

My wife and I went out on the half day tour, and it was amazing! Our guide knew so much, and was so passionate about her work. We saw so many beautiful places, and hearing about the story of this area really brought a deeper connection. When we come back, we will be joining another of these tours!
