NOTRE-DAME DE PEBRAC ABBEY
The small village of Pébrac strives to keep the remains of its abbey, founded in 1062 by Pierre de Chavanon. For centuries, the Abbey radiated into neighboring departments (its priory stretching into Aveyron, Lozère, Ardèche and Cantal). Born from a noble family of Langeac, Pierre de Chavanon has rebuilt the church and gathered around him religious people who placed themselves under the sign of Saint Augustine. After his death in 1080, he was canonized. The church was erected in 1097 by Pope Urban II. In the fifteenth century, after the troubles of the Hundred Years War, the church is restored by the family of Flagheac and the abbey has a period of prosperity. In the seventeenth century, the abbey passes into the congregation of Sainte Geneviève. It perished in 1791. The church had only one nef that ended today with a flat wall. The square courtyard of the center is surrounded by conventual buildings. The cloister is now a simple preau. Attenant to the Abbey is the beautiful garden of the church of Pébrac and its cultures of simple ones.
