The Waitaki Museum, formerly the North Otago Museum, features scenes of pioneer life, as well as episodes from the gold rush. It also explains the construction of the town's white stone buildings. It houses a collection of taoka (Maori treasure) related to Maori settlement: tools, fishing/hunting equipment. The museum itself is part of history. Indeed, created in 1863 for the great Dunedin exhibition of 1865, the museum is now housed in the Athenaeum building of 1882.
