HYDROPOWER STATION
For a long time, a hydroelectric station project has been under way, but the inhabitants of the region have mobilized against the project because of its adverse effects on nature. In order not to damage the environment, the hydroelectric station was finally built underground. This station is visiting if you cruise in the Doubtful Sound with Real Travel. The work was completed in 1963 and was completed in 1971. The electricity produced is used to feed the Smelter Smelter in Bluff, approximately 170 km away. For the construction and maintenance of the station, a road was required between Lake Hospitality and the Doubtful Sound: the Wilmot Pass (670 m), the 22 km of New Zealand's most expensive road since the cost was estimated at $ 1,94 per centimetre, eight times more than the planned amount.
