The main museum in Invercargill is dedicated to the region's past and to Maori culture, art and heritage. The collections cover the whole of Southland's human and natural history and there is also a programme of temporary exhibitions on various themes. Don't miss the endangered tuataras in the vivarium, slow-growing reptiles that have begun to breed in captivity. The museum is under construction, but it is possible to visit some of the exhibitions.
