RANDONNÉES
The hiking list is not exhaustive, it is better to go to the RFSO and get their excellent Day Walks brochure. Tokoekas kiwis are one of the main attractions of the island. Their population is estimated to be over 10 000 individuals, but they are not easily observed, especially as they are largely on the western side of the island, the least accessible. To give some ideas, the Fern Gully Track (2-hour round trip) walks along the Mill Creek River in the middle of a forest covered with ferns. For those who think stay longer, the early summer is the time to try to see Blue penguins at Ackers Point (3-hour return).
On the Horseshoe Bay beach, the collection of beautiful shells is a small moment of fun. From here, it is possible to push up to the Horseshoe Point (3-4 round trip) more to the east. Finally, one of the musts is to hike on Weeds island, a bird paradise, free of any predators.
Finally, those who plan a day-long visit can make small walks around the different bays, such as Le and the Raroa Walks (1 hour round trip) that joins the Deep Bay Track (2 round trip) along the Thule Road.
