The Rakiura trail is one of the 11 Great Walks of the country. Between beach and lush forest, it is an ideal hike to take time for yourself, to seek peace and quiet, more difficult to find in the popular treks of the North and South Islands. More peace and quiet means more chances to see kiwis and endemic species after dark, provided you use the red filters given at the DOC office or use the special mode of your headlamp. Rakiura track opens the doors to a real sanctuary.
