180 million years old, the fossils of the petrified forest are revealed at low tide. There is a trail leading to the petrified forest as well as to the pygmy and antipodean penguin viewing area, although the latter are rarer to observe. If you are observant, it is possible to see Hector's dolphins in Purpoise Bay. Sea lions and fur seals can also be seen all along the coast. To observe penguins, it is best to go at dawn or dusk. It is forbidden to light them and to disturb them!
