I do not recommend staying at this hotel unless you like having your time wasted and your property damaged. My girlfriend and I visited the San Francisco Proper Hotel in late February 2024 as part of a weekend celebrating her birthday and left severely disappointed.

The main complaint is that the valet service left a large, dented scratch on the rear passenger door of her car. Clearly, the result of the valet driver taking a right turn too tight and bumping the side of the car while moving it into the parking garage. Before we left the hotel, the valet company provided information to file a claim and said that they would refund the valet charge of $90 a night, with the whole experience holding up the subsequent part of our vacation by a couple hours. Days later, after submitting the claim, the company denied any wrongdoing. The valet charge took two weeks and additional complaints before it was finally refunded. If you plan to stay at this hotel you need to take documentary photos of your car before handing it over to valet.

These are the other less than stellar parts of the hotel experience that I could have overlooked if it weren’t for the careless and dishonest valet service. After we arrived at the hotel, the concierge tried to charge us twice for our room. We were locked out of our room, with all our belongings inside it, because the faulty deadbolt somehow locked as the door closed. While this isn’t the hotel’s fault, the area surrounding it is affected by a staggering amount of visible homelessness. The short walk we took around the hotel at night felt tense and a bit unsafe. I think this would be especially shocking for someone from out of town who does not experience visible homelessness regularly.

The good: Villion is delicious and has good service. The hotel is decorated nicely.

To the San Francisco Proper, you owe us a refund for our stay and compensation for the damages caused by your valet service.

The San Francisco Proper wasted our time, damaged our property, and cast a cloud over a special weekend. Don’t let it happen to you.

Very well designed hotel. Rooms are small but very well appointed and functional. Common areas are nice and stylish. Food was very good any day. It’s too bad that the location hasn’t been cleaned up as there are many homeless around, this is due to the city of San Francisco allowing this, not necessarily the hotel’s fault. I do wish they would have more staff, they were understaffed and every time
I needed someone at the front desk I had to wait 3-10 mins for them as they only had 1-2 people at all times. Great service but the hotel needs more people to help with guests’ needs. Nice experience and potential to be an amazing hotel. Oh and great gym!

I've been staying at the San Francisco Proper years before the pandemic. In fact, I think my first stay was in November 2018 and all I can remember was how much I loved it. I never forgot this little gem of a boutique nestled in a historic flatiron building at 7th and Market in Mid-Market. So when the occasion rose to revisit during GDC, I was non too hesitant to book. As soon as you walk in you feel the eclectic art deco and furnishings with a beautiful lobby marble which I hear is the original flooring at over 80 years old. The room has a vibrant juxtaposition of colors, textures and even wallpaper that made me not want to leave for the day. It's a beautiful property. They have Aesop bathroom amenities, Nordic Vifa speakers and non-bulky lightweight black-and-white cotton you tie like a kimono. They have changed a lot on the food menu in the restaurant but the food and wine is still quite good - try the Colar Domino red wine, yum! Another great part of the stay was Ato, the maintenance guy. He came to the room to fix a slow draining sink and ended up checking and fixing everything else in the bathroom that wasn't up to his standard. What a lovely and competent man he was. He's really the reason I even stopped my busy day to write the review. Good help is hard to find but he exceeded my expectations. Thanks Ato and Proper, still my favorite hotel in the Bay area!

Super chill and artsy spot. Plenty of space for casual work meetings.

This hotel is perfect except for the location. Customer service is second to known, friendly faces connected to attentive staff from the valet to housekeeping. This hotel creates a level of approachable luxury that is perfect. And the restaurants and rooftop bar make the perfect place to start or end your night. The only downside I can even say about this hotel is if you aren't used to a major metropolitan area you may feel some type of way about the street it's on and it's occupants. Personally, it didn't make it not worth it for me.

No way will I ever stay at this hotel again. Homeless drug addicts are EVERYWHERE around the hotel. It’s unsafe to even think of leaving the hotel at night. The area surrounding the hotel smells like a meth lab. It’s horrible. The city of San Francisco needs help.

i checked in 2/23/24 at 7:30pm for one night with my boyfriend to celebrate my birthday. we left our car with the valet (attendant said it would be $75) 1. upon check-in they tried to charge me $614, meaning i’d be paying again for the night i already paid for. 2. shortly after being shown our rooms, we went for a walk and abruptly turned around after seeing the dire circumstances surrounding the hotel. when we returned, our room was locked from the inside, which made us late to our reservation, as we had to wait for the engineer to come and manually open the door. 3. upon check out the valet returned my car with a huge scratch on the rear right door. they did not inform me of the scratch. i was directed to Stefen Navarro, Senior Guest Service Manager. he assured me that my car would be taken care of and tried to rush me off the property. he also confirmed that he would be returning my valet fee, which was originally misquoted by the valet attendant and actually a total charge of $91.13. that still has not been returned after 1.5 weeks.

writing this in the hopes that they right their wrong. i truly did not deserve that, i came to this business because i loved how beautiful the decor was and was so excited to spend my birthday here. they wasted my time, money, and treated me pretty awfully as someone supporting their business.

Wow the service and amenities were top notch. It was my first time at a Proper Hotel and now I'm a big fan. Minus the ridiculous price tag for the bill, and everything was worth it though. From the rooftop bar with a beautiful view of SF downtown to all the paintings and designs of the lobby and breakfast area. Oh they also had a nice gym set up and coffee & tea daily. Not the best location in terms of area for the hotel with neighborhood but I guess that's why they provide drop offs for guests and charge you a service fee. Super friendly staff and they gave you treats the first day. Overall 10/10

Very nice hotel. Location is fine, but the whole homeless situation is not ok

The hotel is surrounded by homeless drug attics. It was unsettling for me. The hotel is beautiful and staff amazing. The city needs to clean up the streets. It was very sad.

Overall pleasant experience. All employees were courteous and helpful and went above and beyond to accommodate us. Thank you Christian for helping us with departure and loading. The area isn't the best but we did not encounter any issues being outside or walking out to our vehicle.

Overall, our stay was wonderful. The staff were attentive and helpful, the restaurants exceeded our expectations, and the room was spacious and comfortable. However, once you step outside the hotel you’re slapped in the face with SF/CA political ideologies. I can’t even put into words how upside down this city is, especially the area around surrounding the Hotel. Solution: Lyft to and from the entrance of the hotel.

The hotel is beautiful, room is small but cozy. The valet and the restaurant staff were very friendly.

However, the front desk host, Lindsey, did not seem to know what she was doing. She walked away as I approached the front desk. When she came back to check me in, she did not offer water nor introduce any of the amenities and restaurants that they have to offer. More training is required for her.

I had a wonderful stay at the San Francisco Proper on a recent business trip. Breakfast at the Villon was spectacular. The location may be a concern for some guests, but the complimentary valet alleviated much of my worry with traveling around the city. Thanks to Theresa for the great service!

Beautiful Hotel with amazing service in every way. Location is in a bit sketchy part of DT but staff is very aware. Use Hotel car to go places or Lyft. Don't walk at night.
