Why is it still closed to the public? You can’t use the virus excuse anymore.

The air BNB is old but quaint... Private beach. Great views. Quiet. Private parking... Definitely worth checking out.

As of mid Feb 2024, the grounds are not open to the public. You must make a reservation and stay at the hostel (rent bed) or one of the 2 houses on the property.
They mentioned signing a waiver to pass through the property to get to the beach, but haven't done this.

Montara Lighthouse and its hostel is a unique place to spend a night at the Pacific Coast close to San Francisco and the Bay Area. I first visited it with my family when we used to live in Redwood City during the 90s. .

Gates were closed when it said it was open online. I looked at reviews and it seems it hasn't really been open, a little sad bc we were trying to hit up all the light houses on our route. Google should be updated if this location is closed for good.

The HI Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel in Northern California is a charming coastal retreat offering budget-friendly accommodations. Located near Montara State Beach, the hostel provides a unique experience with breathtaking ocean views and proximity to scenic hiking trails. The hostel features shared dormitory-style rooms and private rooms, catering to various traveler preferences.

The historic Point Montara Lighthouse, a short walk away, adds character to the surroundings. The hostel's communal areas foster a friendly atmosphere, providing opportunities for guests to connect. While facilities are basic, the emphasis is on the coastal experience and communal spirit. It's an excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers seeking a tranquil coastal getaway in Northern California.

Attempted to visit but was unable to get in. The exit is a little tricky as it's not well marked, and if you blinked, you may miss it while driving 60+ on a main highway. The photos, none of which are mine, show a lovely overlook, beautiful scenery but unfortunately no access. I'm not sure why it's closed.

We spent two nights at Point Montara Lighthouse hostel this week. It was incredible. We booked a room with four beds (a double and bunks) for the three of us. The room was perfect with comfortable bedding and the beds were already made up. We were in Surfside and were extremely fortunate to have it to ourselves on the first night. The kitchen is perfect, with incredible views. The lounge area was comfortable. It felt like being in someone’s home! Lovely little touches such as the fresh flowers and reed diffusers added to the ambiance.
The managers were helpful and informative but completely unobtrusive once we were given keys.
The main draw however is the location. Incredible views, a gorgeous sandy, private beach, the working lighthouse (with a fascinating history) and an amazing seating area. Pelicans, cormorants and other seabirds can be seen flying overhead and we saw a seal several times as well as a large buzzard. The peace and tranquillity was tangible. We did not want to leave. We are already planning a California coastal hostel trip and shall definitely return. Thank you.

This has always been a favorite to stay at. I used to go yearly as it is absolutely beautiful and convenient to the see the ocean. I wonder though, will this ever become a true hostel again? I miss that. ????

Cool place, especially for large groups. Great scenery and alright lodging and bathrooms. Mattresses are comfy, beds are creaky, living room and kitchen space are a decent size.

I understand it is not open to the public at this time.

Point Montana was closed so we could not get close to the lighthouse. This picture was taken while my husband drove the car and I took endless pictures until I got one good one.

Saw this on the map while driving down the coast and thought it looked like a cool spot to check out. Turns out it's not publicly accessible anymore though. :(

Could you guys open your gates? It’s been 2,5 years since covid, you can’t use this excuse anymore. This lighthouse used to be my favorite coastal spot..stop keeping it locked ????
