CANNERY ROW
Fishing port of Monterey with an aquarium and a Disneyland atmosphere, to be avoided on weekends.
Monterey's fishing port was immortalized by the famous John Steinbeck in his novel Cannery Row, which describes the cannery district as a place of debauchery and stench that was bursting with life. Today, Cannery Row still exists, but it has nothing to do with Steinbeck's. With the opening of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the number of tourists per square meter has exploded and it is now just a succession of souvenir stores and rather overpriced boutique hotels. Disneyland atmosphere guaranteed, to be avoided on weekends.
