Open since 1998, this French-style bistro offers only the classics: marrow bones, quenelles, pig's feet, salted lentils, cassoulet, coq au vin... It must be said that the owner (and chef) Philippe Jeanty, who arrived in California at the end of the 1970s, was born in Epernay (in Champagne) where he learned the trade. It is him who, in 1977, opened the first good table in Yountville. And as he says himself, in his restaurant they serve good food that varies according to the seasons, to customers whose first names you quickly get to know.

I was excited to try this restaurant. Have wanted to come here for a while. The overall experience was just a little disappointing. We were seated outside in their enclosed patio. our reservation was at 8, so I was a little surprised because there were tables inside, and the patio was half empty. There was an insane rainstorm, so the tarps were blowing open several times, and the wind came through the openings. It took a solid 10 minutes for a waiter to acknowledge us. After that, he was pretty attentive. We had the salad Lyonnaise and paté de campagne as starters, both generous portions. The salad was a little heavy on the bacon grade but otherwise tasty. The paté was good, although it didn't come with any bread or croutons, which was a bit strange. We had the mussels and steak tartare for mains and ordered fries on the side. The mussels were good but the steak tartare stole the show. By FAR the best plate we ordered! Highly recommend. again generous portions, so we skipped dessert. I would recommend this place, but the atmosphere inside on a rainy night is probably nicer. Given the price and image this place has, I would have expected a little bit more of a refined experience in terms of service and table choice.

I shall return. It isn’t often I will return to a restaurant when traveling because there are so many others I want to try but this restaurant was fantastic. Recommended by our Chef Instructor at the CIA and some locals, this restaurant did not disappoint. We shared the Moules a la Normande with frites, Dungeness Crab Soufflé (incroyable!), Salade de Betteraves (beet salad), and the piece de resistance…the Lemon Meringue Tart…one of the best desserts that has ever crossed my lips. Encore!
